Mission and Values

Our core values drive our mission of Proclaiming God’s Excellencies. They provide the practical, biblical basis for all ministry at GBC.

They define who we are and how we do things.

Expository Preaching and Teaching

“Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.” (2 Timothy 4:2)

We are committed to expository preaching and teaching, meaning that our aim is to proclaim the main message of a given biblical text. We do this because we want to be careful to preach God’s agenda as expressed in his Word.

This task involves:

  • Preaching or teaching through particular books of the Bible to more accurately understand any particular passage in its larger context
  • A focus on seeing how any particular passage points us to the gospel of Christ

Biblical Methodology

“… I am writing these things to you so that… you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.” (1 Timothy 3:14-15)

We desire to operate in our church in accordance with God’s authoritative Word. This leads us to these commitments (among many others):

  • Leadership through a plurality of spiritually qualified elders
  • Complementarian approach to gender roles in ministry
  • Scriptural integrity in our corporate worship services

Sincere Love

“Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart.” (1 Peter 1:22)

Jesus said that the greatest commandment was to love God and to love our neighbor. The grace we have received from God through Jesus should overflow to those around us. Without love, nothing really matters. Sincere love will result in:

  • Trusting, sincere relationships
  • Ministries of practical, compassionate care
  • Being willing to lovingly confront a brother or sister if they are sinning
  • Being a warm, welcoming congregation to guests

Every Member Ministry

“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ…” (Ephesians 4:11-12)

We are a congregationally-governed church under Christ and recognize that all believers are called by God and gifted by the Holy Spirit for the work of ministry.

So we strive to:

  • Help every member discover and employ their spiritual gifts
  • Maintain a focus of ministry training within the congregation

Great Commission Focus

“And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…’” (Matthew 28:18-20)

We strive to proclaim the gospel in obedience to Jesus’ command. We do this through:

  • Emphasizing the importance of caring personal relationships with non-believers for the purpose of sharing the gospel
  • Equipping church members to share the gospel
  • Committing to actively support world missions (with a special emphasis on reaching people groups with currently little or no gospel witness)
